Co-Team Leads: Dr. Charles Fleischer, MD; Jack Gardner, PA

Dr. Charles Fleischer and Jack Gardner, PA and their mission participants return to Honduras for a week of clinics; and to continue to nurture local collaborations that will provide sustainable community health benefits long after the mission returns home.
After landing in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Friday, August 24, the team will travel to Olanchito in trucks or vans – a 5 to 6-hour journey – and check-in at the Beverly Hotel. Each day, the team will travel 1-2 hours from Olanchito to remote villages to conduct primary care clinics. Team health care providers will evaluate and treat patients, administer medications and steroid joint injections, perform minor surgery, fit eyeglasses and minister to their spiritual needs.
In addition to direct treatment, team members will be able to assist with the current implementation of Model Health Village (MHV) – a multi-dimensional, self-sustaining approach to reducing remote village health problems. The project began with onsite inspections and community health needs assessments. For this region, the research-based priorities are to reduce diarrheal illness, reduce lost-work and school absence due to illness, and to lower mortality.
On this mission, we will also be implementing oral hygiene and hand washing education as well as village-appropriate technologies for safe water and sanitation. The MHV program is the result of a collaboration of villagers, village leaders, the Olanchito Medical Community, local Ministry of Health in Honduras, the Olanchito Rotary club and Rotary E-club of the Carolinas. As the project is implemented, additional surveys and data will evaluate efficacy. The Honduras experience will be used to create best practices for developing sustainable, non-government grass-roots/root-cause programs in other disadvantaged regions throughout the world.
After a week of work, the mission includes a day of relaxation in the coastal town of Tela on Friday, August 31st. Team members will enjoy beach activities, snorkeling and local shopping. After overnighting at the Hotel Playa Bonita, the mission departs from San Pedro Sula airport on Saturday morning to return to the USA.
Dr. Charles Fleischer returns to Honduras for the third time. He is a second-year Family Medicine resident at the Florida State University College of Medicine and lives in Naples, FL. He was the previous Co-Team Lead with Dr. Gary Goforth (Program Director of FSU Family Medicine residency, with over 40 VIMM trips). Dr. GoForth and Jack Gardner, PA, developed the Village Health Worker program in Honduras.
