This will be VIMM’s third trip to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a small tropical island off the southern coast of India. Many rural areas are poverty stricken and many people lack proper medical care. The team will be led by Kirby Phillips and medical director Dr. Damian Gunaratne. This will be Kirby's 19th VIMM trip, he has experience leading teams to Haiti, Sri Lanka, the Dominican Republic and Panama. This is Dr. Gunaratne's fifth VIMM trip and he is excited to help lead a team to his country of origin. Dr. Gunaratne helped lead the first team to Sri Lanka and is fluent in the Sinhalese language. He currently resides in Ontario, Canada where he is a family/emergency room physician.
The team will fly out of Atlanta on September ?, 2020 and land in the capital city of Colombo early in the morning of September ?. They will spend time getting acclimatized and packaging medications in preparation for the clinic days ahead. Each clinic day will be spent in a different location; the team will travel to rural areas, urban inner-city areas and an orphanage.
Accommodations and meals will be provided by host families and meals will be shared with them (Sri Lanka is known for their delicious cuisine!) In the clinics, doctors and other medical professionals will see patients, nurses will assist with triage and work in the pharmacy, and non-medical members will offer eyeglasses, assist with the pharmacy, and do other work as needed. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and non-medical helpers are needed. Team members will spend the last day of the trip in a coastal town where there will have time for sight-seeing and relaxing on the beach.
The team will fly back to the United States on September ?, 2020.
This will be a challenging yet extremely rewarding trip. Please prayerfully consider joining us in helping those in need in Sri Lanka.
