Honduras - August 2020

Aug. 07 2020 — Aug. 15 2020

After landing in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Friday, the team will travel to Olanchito, Honduras in trucks and/or vans (5-6 hour journey). We will stay in the Beverly Hotel in Olanchito. The team will conduct primary care clinics with a focus on health promotion in villages located within 1-2 hours from Olanchito each day.

Team clinicians will evaluate and treat all patients presenting to the clinics and have the capability to care for ill patients, administer steroid joint injections, perform minor surgery, and fit for eye glasses. We typically see over 1,200 patients. On our final day we will spend a day of relaxation in the coastal town of Tela on Saturday.

We will leave Olanchito early on Friday and stay at the Hotel Playa Bonita. Beach activities and shopping are nearby; there is also opportunity to enjoy the beach and go snorkeling. The team will depart from the San Pedro Sula airport on Saturday morning.

Jack Gardner PA-C has been doing 'developing country medical work' for the past 16 years in 15 different countries. This will be his 14th time on this trip to Olanchito, Honduras. Jack has brought over 60 people on developing country medical trips. This includes MDs, MD residents, PA-Cs, APRNs, RNs, pharmacists, medical students and non medical people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

A Honduran MD will be working with us and we will have a guided tour of the Olanchito Hospital. You will also have the opportunity to learn about and visit the Rotary 'Model Healthy Village Project'. This project includes; filters for clean water, new latrines to manage human waste, oral hygiene education including providing tooth brushes, healthy habits education including providing soap and training a Village Health Worker. This is being implemented in a remote mountain village as a comprehensive pilot project.

Whether this is your first trip or you have experience in this type of trip, Jack recommends that "this is a very good trip to participate in".
